Rep. Annette Glenn, R-Midland, today noted a new effort is underway to raise awareness about human trafficking and fight one of the nation’s fastest-growing crimes.

Glenn said the Michigan State Police are joining forces with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Illinois State Police and Indiana State Police — along with the Truckers Against Trafficking organization — to educate those in the transportation industry and the general public about the signs of human trafficking. The law enforcement organizations also will focus on enforcement of measures cracking down on trafficking in the week-long effort that runs through Friday, Jan. 22.

The goal is to help truck drivers, truck stop employees, rest area attendants and others recognize the signs of human trafficking – a horrific crime that uses threats and coercion to force people into the sex trade, domestic servitude and other labor against their will.

“It’s a common misconception that human trafficking occurs only in large cities. Sadly, it occurs right here – victimizing women, men and children in our communities,” Glenn said. “The first step in prevention is awareness. This initiative launched by Michigan State Police and Truckers Against Trafficking will put more eyes and ears into the fight against human trafficking.”
